1. A Baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

It’s incredibly painful to see your precious little child with a feeding tube, on breathing support, and having an IV stuck in her.

A NICU baby is something that no parent can plan or prepare for.

I remember clearly the phone call from my nearly 33-week pregnant wife on that afternoon in late October.

After a routine prenatal care visit, her blood pressure was rising just slightly. The doctor sent her to have some tests done at the hospital, nothing too scary.

She was understandably upset, knowing that similar issues kept us in the hospital for nearly a week after our son’s birth.

My wife said I was fine to stay at the office and go to my class that night, but I knew better. I headed straight for her. That night they drove her by ambulance to the hospital in the next city over and admitted her.

Three uneventful days passed with only slight raises in her blood pressure. Then on Friday night, it continued to rise. The doctor said it was time to have the baby. They reassured us that babies this far along usually do very well.
