3 Small Changes I’ve Made To Eliminate My Depression

1. Started moving my body more

Living in an area with cold winters where there’s little daylight is especially tough on your mental health. Your body needs vitamin D from the sun, and when it doesn’t get enough, it leads to a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD.

I’ve had SAD nearly my entire life. Until last year.

One weekend I got up early on a Saturday morning, dusted off the snow shoes that I got for Christmas a couple of years earlier, and headed up the canyon.

It was a lot to get used to at first. But I found a remarkable sense of satisfaction in being outside in the mountains in the winter.

There’s nothing quite like the stillness that fills the snow-covered trees when you pause to take it all in. Even while moving, hearing the crunch of your snowshoes on the snow as you walk, you’re in awe of the incredible beauty of the wintery scene around you.

Not to mention the fulfillment that comes from getting your heart rate up. It feels amazing to work up a sweat enough that you have to take off layers.

It’s as if you’re shedding the blanket of cold and darkness that winter brings as you come to realize that you’ve overcome the elements. Instead of merely enjoying…
