The Independence Day (Movie) Speech Application In 2018

If you haven’t seen Independence Day you’ve got to, right now. Or at least head over to YouTube to check out the clip of what is arguably the greatest motivational speech in a movie ever.

“We will not go quietly into the night!

We will not vanish without a fight!

We’re going to live on!

We’re going to survive!”

Many movies attempt such monumental speeches, yet so many of them have failed. Sorry, Pacific Rim, it was good, just not Independence Day good. Let’s not even get into Independence Day: Resurgence. Thanks for the letdown Roland Emmerich!

If there’s a better speech that I’m missing that you think is better then let me know in the comments because I’ve got to check it out to see for myself. I may have seen a better movie speech but have probably forgotten because this one is so powerful.

The speech is so good that it almost makes you forget that Jeff Goldblum is in this movie. I hope I don’t get struck down by a lightning bolt for saying that.

The speech is great because it identifies with some of the deepest desires within all of mankind-

The desire to be united.

The desire to survive.

The desire to fight back when we’re knocked down.

Independence Day is a whopping 22 years old this year. But some of the common themes from this speech, and the movie itself are still applicable in 2018. Here are just a few:

We are as humankind under attack. Not by aliens, fortunately (unfortunately?). What attacks us in 2018 is far more subtle and far more broad-range. There isn’t just one thing attacking us, but many. Poor mental health, addiction (including, and especially, to social media), Families being torn apart (literally, even) are just a few examples. I’d wager that every human being on the planet is experiencing some kind of “attack” on their health, mental wellness, or some other aspect of their life.

“We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore.” The people around you are more important than your opinions and differences. The world is, unfortunately, far too divisive right now. You will always feel better holding your tongue and choosing not to quarrel with those you love. This even applies to strangers you may meet here on the Internet. They all have their demons just like you do. To stop the divisiveness we must not only stop being at odds with one another, we must develop unity.

We all desperately need to unite to survive. Depression is beaten with help from other people. Families are repaired by humble hearts of each Family member, together. Addiction is beaten by connection. Why are we still bent on struggling and suffering alone, when the only way out is with help from all of those around us who love us?

We need to recognize that we are all under “attack”, set aside our differences, and begin to unite with each other once again.

Let us “not go quietly into the night!”

Let us “not vanish without a fight!”

Let us live on!

Let us survive!

“Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!”
